Where can I find CHI-CHI’S ® products not carried at my local grocery store?
Use the product locator to enter a zip-code to display a listing of items and if there is a store within your area carrying this item. A few items can be purchased directly from the Hormel Foods Online Store. Are CHI-CHI’S® products affiliated with the Chi-Chi’s Restaurants?
Chi-Chi’s Restaurant chain closed in North America in 2004 but there are restaurant locations overseas in Belgium, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait operated by Tumbleweed Restaurants. Chi-Chi’s Restaurants were once famous for salsa and the happiest of happy hours. Today, that fun and flavor lives on since Hormel Foods acquired the rights to use the CHI-CHI'S® brand name and mark for a grocery products line of CHI-CHI'S® Mexican Foods tortillas, sauces, salsas and seasoned meat tubs.

2. Canned Products

Can we serve a product beyond the "Best By" date shown on the container?
CHI-CHI’S® Jalapeños, Green Chilies have a “best by” date. Once opened, the product has a shelf life of 2 weeks in the refrigerator. CHI-CHI’S® Enchilada Sauces come in cans with “best by” dates. Once opened, the product must be refrigerated in an air-tight container and used within 3 days.

For best quality, flavor and freshness, we recommend using our canned items by the date on the container. After this time, the product should be safe to use as long as the can has not been compromised (no dents, split seams, etc.). We recommend storing canned items in a cool, dry place to adequately preserve the flavor.

What is the date code and how is it interpreted on the food container?
The date code for products produced in the United States is most often printed on the bottom of each container to provide the following information:
  • The first letter indicates the manufacturing facility: S02052
  • The first two numbers indicate the month it was processed: S02052
  • The second set of two numbers indicate the day it was processed: S02052
  • The last number indicates the year it was processed: S02057
  • Example: date code printed is S02052
Interpretation: Produced in Stockton, California on February 5, 2012
Some imported canned products are manufactured in Brazil or Argentina which will contain a date code structure that is different from products produced in the United States. For assistance with foreign date codes or for any questions concerning our products, please call our consumer response line 1-800-523-4635, between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. CT Monday - Friday, excluding holidays. Summer hours may vary.

Is it safe to repackage and store the product in the original container?
Once a CHI-CHI’S® canned product is opened it should be removed from the package, transferred to an air-tight container, placed in a refrigerator, and then consumed within two to three days. CHI-CHI’S® Chilies and Jalapeño’s once opened have a shelf life of 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

3. Glass & Plastic Jars

What is the shelf life of products in glass and plastic jars after they have been opened?
After a product packaged in a glass or plastic jar is opened, it should be placed in a refrigerator immediately, and consumed within three to five days. Once opened, CHI-CHI’S® Salsa Original has a shelf life of 3 months refrigerated while CHI-CHI’S® Salsa Fiesta has a shelf life of 7-10 days refrigerated. It’s best to shake your salsa and then pour it into your serving bowl. Introducing a spoon into the jar can contaminate the product and cause spoilage.

4. Microwaveable Containers

What is the expiration date on products in microwaveable containers?
For the best quality, we recommend using CHI-CHI’S® tub products by the “best-by” date on the container. Once the product is open, leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator and used within 5 days. The product can be frozen for 3 months for best quality. Thaw in the refrigerator prior to using. CHI-CHI’S® Fiesta Plates have a "best by date on the package. We recommend that the product be consumed any time up to the "best by" date printed on the container.

5. Dry Goods

CHI-CHI’S® Flour Tortillas have a “best-by” date and product should last after opening by that date as long as the zip lock is used. This product can be frozen for best quality up to 6 months. CHI-CHI’S® Tortilla Chips and Seasonings and Mixes have a “best-by” date on the package. Using the product by that date will ensure the best quality.
